So now what do I do?
Have you ever looked to the skies and wondered what it would be like to soar above those clouds, over those mountains, or out over the ocean? It is an awe inspiring dream, but it does not have to be an unrealistic one. Imagine the ability to visit your friends and family across the country over a four day weekend, or fly away for a romantic getaway on a whim. These are the dreams that pilot’s live out every day all over the country. What’s stopping you?
The opportunity to fly is all around you. Almost every local airport offers flight instruction. You just need to make that first call, or that first visit, and You’ve Gotta Try This points you in their direction.
What To Expect From a First Lesson?
You can expect the first lesson to cover: Orientation to the aircraft you will fly, execution of pre-flight checks, some ground schooling on the basics you will perform in the sky (although this will be limited in a first lesson), an overview of the flight plan, and an hour of flight time. The conduct varies with each instructor, but most will man all of the controls during your first flight, and allow you to observe all that goes into flying. After your flight, ensure that you receive/give a thorough back brief. This after-action-review is your chance to ensure that you get the most out of that day’s lesson.
What’s next?
FAA acknowledges the inherent dangers in flying and ensures safety of all involved through continuing education. There are ratings for pilots as they gain more experience.
- Private Pilot
- Instrumental Rating
- Commercial Rating
- Professional Rating
Can I Afford This?
Flight training is an expensive hobby and overwhelms a lot of people. Relax, the cost is spread over a period of time and can be managed, if you make the commitment. It varies among competitive flight schools, but with all of the ground and air instruction, aircraft rental time, fuel, books, and testing fees you can expect to spend between $4,500-$5,500 to complete your basic Private Pilot’s license.
Note: Flight Schools are competitive and often they will offer a Free Introductory Flight.
What am I Waiting For?
Whether you look to aviation as a hobby, sport, or future career, the possibility is there, and You’ve Gotta Try This.
